Packing for storage unit is not the same as when you are relocating and you just have to pack and move. Your things will be packed for a shorter amount of time when you’re relocating then they will when you’re storing them. And this difference is important because there are some consequences to it. First of all, you will have to be more careful when you’re packing for storage unit. And second of all, you will have to prepare some of your belongings before you pack them. With that being said, take a look at what you have to do when you’re packing for storage unit.
Are you up for some cleaning?
There’s a one really important step that you need to take when you’re packing for storage unit. And I think you’re not going to like it. But, trust me, you will like the alternative even less. Namely, no matter what you’re packing for storage unit you will have to prepare it for storage by washing and cleaning it thoroughly. Because the said alternative is to clean it when you want to use it again. And since it stayed in a storage unit for a long time it is going to be much more difficult to clean it.
Just think about your wine glasses, for example. If they are not carefully washed and completely dried some time later when you want to use them again for some celebration you will be met with a surprise. They will have yellow marks on them. And let me tell you, those yellow marks are very difficult to clean. And to make the matters worse, you’ll probably remember that you could’ve prevented it just by cleaning those glasses before storing them.
Preparing and packing for storage unit
Cleaning is not the only thing you need to do before you start packing for storage unit. You will also have to prepare some of your belongings because some materials need special care. And if you don’t provide that special care those materials will deteriorate. So this is what international movers suggest that you do:
- wood – put a coat of wax or furniture polish on any wooden parts of your belongings
- leather – treat the leather with a leather conditioner
- metal – put oil on metal
- textile – use cedar or other herbal smells to repel pests
Packing for storage unit
So when you’re packing for storage unit you need to make sure that every part of every item is covered. If you don’t have a climate-controlled storage unit then this is even more important. That means that you can’t be lazy! But you just have to do it if you want your belongings to look brand new after being stored for some time.
Another important thing is that you fill out all the empty spaces inside of the boxes. Because if there are empty spaces your belongings can fall, move or bump into each other during the transportation and all of that can cause scratches and damage to your belongings.
And the last step when packing for storage unit is that you label everything properly. The easiest way to do that is by making a list of everything a certain box contains and then sticking that list on the side of the box. You should also write on the box itself a short reminder of what’s inside of it. So for example, you can write on the box “winter clothes”. And then, make a list that says 3 winter jackets, ski pants, mittens and so on.
